How Much Does a Local Move Cost in 2026?

Local moves are billed hourly in almost every US metro. For two movers and a truck, expect $100-$200 per hour, with a 2-4 hour minimum. The final number depends less on the hourly rate you see advertised and more on the real conditions of your move.

Typical Cost by Home Size

  • Studio: $400 - $700
  • 1 bedroom: $500 - $1,000
  • 2 bedroom: $800 - $1,800
  • 3 bedroom: $1,500 - $3,500
  • 4+ bedroom: $2,500 - $5,500

What Actually Drives the Price

  1. Crew size - More movers cost more per hour but finish faster. Usually a net win on anything above a studio.
  2. Access - Stairs, long walks from the truck, elevator reservations, and parking permits all add hours.
  3. Specialty items - Piano, safe, pool table, or gun safe typically cost $250-$1,000 extra.
  4. Packing - If you want the mover to pack, that is separate labor plus materials.
  5. Day and season - End-of-month, weekends, and summer book out first and price highest.

Estimate Types

Always ask which estimate type you are getting in writing. A binding estimate locks the price. A binding not-to-exceed means you pay the lower of the estimate or the actual cost. Non-binding quotes can go up at delivery (capped at 110% under FMCSA rules).
