Interstate moves are regulated by the FMCSA. Every mover crossing state lines needs an active USDOT number and MC (Motor Carrier) household-goods authority. Verify both numbers on the FMCSA SAFER public database before signing anything.

Interstate moves are priced on weight plus miles plus services. A 2-bedroom 1,000-mile move typically runs $2,500-$6,000. Larger homes or cross-country distances push $6,000-$10,000+. Pickup and delivery spreads of 1-21 days are normal and must be disclosed in writing.

Estimate Types (FMCSA Terms)

Binding: price locked. Non-binding: based on actual weight, mover can collect up to 110% at delivery with the balance due in 30 days. Binding not-to-exceed: you pay the lower of the estimate or the weight-based cost - increasingly the industry standard.

Red Flags to Avoid

No in-home or video estimate. Demands for large deposits. Cash-only or wire-transfer demands. No USDOT or MC number on the quote. Refusal to provide the FMCSA "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" booklet. Any of these patterns is the hostage-loading scam template.
